Corporation Road, Redcar Richard Shepherd of Nunthorpe has converted his
Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano into a 'reproducing piano'. It can
electronically record the keystrokes of the pianist and then reproduce them
exactly - not as an audio sound track, but using sophisticated electronics to
drive the keyboard. Specialist software also enables the computer to
interpret the key strokes on early recordings and piano rolls and to drive
the piano to reproduce the early performance 'live, before your very eyes!'. Ernie Scott, well known to many regulars at Classics
at Kirkleatham is an accomplished pianist in his own right and will be
joining the performance to play duets with the computer and to contribute
solo works by Chopin, Moszowski and Katchaturian. The piano will be 'played' automatically by Oscar
Peterson, Art Tatum and Rachmaninoff to name but a few. Join us to see how
the computer handles the frenetic pace of 'The Flight of the Bumble Bee' or
how many composers' styles you can spot in a special arrangement of 'Happy
Birthday'. The programme includes video inserts from pianist Rex Lawson
and Oscar's widow Kelly Peterson. This is only the second ever public appearance by the
Bösendorfer and, due to the complex logistics, it is unlikely to be repeated! Tickets £10 as above |
